Health Minister urges GRNMA not to leverage patient lives in Conditions of Service negotiations

Health Ministry Appeals to GRNMA to Halt Planned Strike Over Delayed Conditions of Service.

The Ministry of Health has called on the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to reconsider its plan to begin a nationwide strike on Monday, June 2.

The Ministry emphasized that the lives of patients should not be used as a bargaining chip in the push for improved Conditions of Service.

This appeal follows GRNMA’s announcement that more than 128,000 nurses and midwives across the country would withdraw their services if their longstanding demands are not addressed.

The association expressed frustration over the government’s delay in implementing an agreement signed in May 2024. The agreement, reached through the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, includes provisions aimed at enhancing the welfare of nurses and midwives, such as a 20% allowance for those who accept postings to underserved areas. However, one year after the agreement, implementation remains stalled.

In a statement dated May 28, the Ministry said it was surprised by the GRNMA’s decision, especially given the frequent meetings that have taken place between Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and the association’s leadership.

“It is surprising and unfortunate that the GRNMA has taken this route despite several engagements on the matter. The Minister has met with the association more than five times to address their concerns,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry further explained that the revised Conditions of Service were initially set to take effect in 2024 under the previous administration but were delayed. During their most recent meeting, all parties agreed to form a committee involving representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health, and the GRNMA to work towards full implementation.

Reaffirming its commitment to resolving the issue, the Ministry urged the GRNMA to exercise restraint and continue dialogue for the sake of the healthcare sector and the well-being of the Ghanaian public.
