Government to Reconsider Names of Public Universities Renamed Under Previous Administration.

Government considers renaming public universities renamed by Akufo-Addo–Education Minister.

The government is set to introduce a bill in Parliament that may lead to the renaming of certain public universities whose names were changed during former President Nana Akufo-Addo's tenure.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced this while inaugurating the Governing Council of C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Accra, which has faced infrastructure challenges and controversy over its name.

Minister Iddrisu stated that after engaging with various stakeholders, including traditional authorities, education experts, and civil society organizations, the government is considering restoring the universities' original identities.

This consideration comes as a reflection of the government's commitment to honoring the historical significance of these institutions.

This move aims to reconnect these institutions with their historical and cultural roots, rather than discrediting the individuals whose names were previously associated with them.

The proposed bill, expected to be presented to Parliament soon, is part of a broader effort to review institutions renamed or established under the previous administration.

Other universities likely to be affected include the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University.

In essence, the government seeks to ensure that public universities reflect the values and heritage they were founded upon, and this decision is anticipated to have a significant impact on the country's educational landscape.
