Government Developing Mathematics Curriculum for Blind Students Says Education Minister

Government Introduces Inclusive Mathematics Curriculum for the Visually Impaired – Education Minister.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the government is working on a new mathematics curriculum tailored for visually impaired students at the senior high school level.

According to him, this initiative aims to provide equal educational opportunities and open pathways for blind students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Speaking at the official inauguration of a 19-member Governing Council of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Accra, the minister emphasized the need for inclusive education. He also administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new council members.

Mr. Iddrisu added that the government is also developing a curriculum for Ghanaian Sign Language to support students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

He urged the newly constituted council to go beyond policy administration and focus on transforming lives, ensuring Ghana’s human resource remains globally competitive.

He challenged the council to collaborate with stakeholders to create Ghana’s first comprehensive digital education policy by 2026, integrating technology from kindergarten through to SHS.

In his address, the minister also raised concerns about safety in schools and called for swift action to improve discipline and restore order. He asked the council to intensify supervision and inspections to maintain standards.

Touching on nutrition, Mr. Iddrisu expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of meals provided in schools. He urged the council to conduct internal audits to monitor and improve food distribution nationwide.

He further noted that a committee has been formed to review the teacher licensing examinations, assuring that high standards will be maintained throughout the process.

The government also plans to invest in infrastructure to eliminate the double-track system in senior high schools.

Prof. Mawutor Avoke, who chairs the new GES Governing Council, thanked President John Mahama for the trust placed in them. He promised that the council would work diligently to fulfill its responsibilities and help reshape the education system.

Other members of the GES council include Dr. Rosemond Wilson of WAEC, Prof. Azeko Tahiru Salifu from the National Schools Inspectorate Authority, and Mr. Adam Adu Marshall representing the National Teaching Council.

Additional members are Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie from NaCCA and Right Rev. Paa Solomon Grant-Essilfie representing teacher unions.

The Education Minister also inaugurated the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, which is headed by retired Justice Jacob Charles Amonoo-Monney. The council is tasked with overseeing effective governance at the university.
