Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Warns the Public Against Unauthorized Use of Honorary Titles.

Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Issues Warning on Unauthorized Honorary Titles.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has observed with growing concern the increasing rate at which certain institutions are conferring honorary doctorate degrees and professorial titles on individuals.

This trend has attracted public attention and criticism, especially when these honours are granted by institutions that may not possess the requisite accreditation or legal mandate to do so. Recent instances include the conferment of titles on Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), and Rev. Dr. Mark Lamptey.

While the Commission recognises and encourages the celebration of individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society, it is important to stress that such honours must be conferred by institutions that are fully accredited and chartered under the laws of Ghana. These institutions must operate within the framework set by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) and other relevant statutes governing tertiary education in the country.

GTEC considers the public use of such honorary titles, especially when they are incorporated into official names and used in professional or academic contexts, as unethical and misleading. This practice not only undermines the credibility of legitimate academic titles but also poses a risk to the integrity of the entire higher education system.

In light of the above, the Commission issues this formal caution to your institution. You are strongly advised to cease the conferment of honorary degrees and professorships unless you are duly accredited and authorised to do so under Ghanaian law. Continued disregard for this directive will attract serious consequences, including the revocation of your institution’s accreditation status.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission remains committed to upholding quality, credibility, and legal compliance in the delivery of tertiary education in Ghana. We trust in your cooperation as we work together to maintain the highest standards in our educational system.
