Four Prominent Aspirants Emerge in NPP’s 2028 Flagbearer Race.

The contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections is already gaining traction, just months after the party's defeat in the 2024 polls.

With the NPP currently undergoing internal restructuring and efforts to rebuild unity, several influential party members have begun expressing their intentions to lead the party into the next electoral battle. Below are four notable figures who have so far emerged as potential presidential candidates.

 Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, remains a central figure in the emerging race. Despite the party’s electoral setback under his leadership, Dr. Bawumia has remained optimistic, indicating that a second presidential attempt may be more successful, citing the difficulties typically faced by first-time candidates in Ghana.

He continues to enjoy strong backing from party grassroots and key leaders. A recent Global InfoAnalytics poll shows that 57% of NPP supporters favor his return as flagbearer in 2028. However, his path to re-nomination may not be smooth, as other influential voices within the party are also eyeing the top spot.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong

A fierce contender and outspoken former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong has reaffirmed his intention to compete for the flagbearership, asserting his independence from internal pressures. Having finished second to Dr. Bawumia in the 2023 NPP Delegates Conference, Agyapong remains a formidable force in the race.

His candidacy continues to draw considerable support from party members who value his unfiltered style and deep connection with the grassroots. As a seasoned businessman and vocal politician, Agyapong is widely seen as Bawumia’s main rival.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum

Dr. Adutwum, the MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister, has also signaled interest in leading the party. A now-deleted Facebook post hinted at his ambition, highlighting his nationwide impact and vision for Ghana.

The post included campaign-like imagery with the slogan “The ADUTWUM FACTOR – The NPP’s surest bet for victory in 2028,” suggesting he is quietly laying the groundwork for a bid.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong

The most recent addition to the list of potential contenders is Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture. His possible candidacy was hinted at by former MP Andy Appiah-Kubi, who described him as a competent leader with both intellectual depth and business acumen.

According to Appiah-Kubi, Dr. Acheampong’s diverse experience makes him a strong candidate capable of reviving the party’s fortunes in 2028. Though he has yet to publicly confirm his intentions, his name is gaining traction within party circles.

Looking Ahead

With four prominent candidates already in the spotlight, the NPP’s journey toward selecting a flagbearer for 2028 is set to be fiercely contested. As the party works to rebuild its base and regain public trust, unity and visionary leadership will be key to selecting a candidate capable of steering the NPP toward a political comeback.

Stay tuned as this high-stakes political race continues to unfold.
