Education Ministry Renames UHAS After Late President Atta Mills

Through a historic and heartfelt gesture, the government has renamed the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in honor of the late President  John Evans Atta Mills.

The institution will now be known as the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, a name that celebrates the foundational role he played in its establishment and the impact of his legacy on health education in the country.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, during the inauguration of the university’s newly formed Governing Council on Tuesday, May 28, 2025. He explained that the renaming was a mark of national appreciation for Professor Mills, who championed the idea of a dedicated health university and ensured its creation during his presidency.

Established in 2011 and opened to students in 2012, UHAS has since evolved into a leading institution for training healthcare professionals across various disciplines. With campuses in Ho and Hohoe, the university has become a vital contributor to Ghana’s healthcare delivery through education, research, and community service.

The renaming also fulfills long-standing calls from stakeholders, including the university’s founding Vice Chancellor, Professor Fred Binka, who had repeatedly urged the state to recognize Professor Mills by attaching his name to the university he founded. To many, this is a long-overdue acknowledgment of his quiet yet powerful legacy.

Professor Mills was widely respected for his humility, vision, and belief in inclusive development. His commitment to strengthening health and education systems was evident during his time in office, and naming the university after him immortalizes those efforts in a deeply meaningful way.

As UHAS embraces its new name, it continues to move forward with the same mission, producing skilled professionals to improve health outcomes across the country. The name now etched into its identity serves not only as a tribute but as a source of inspiration for future generations.
