COHBS Urges Government to Include JHS Students in School Feeding Programme

Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) Appeals for Inclusion of JHS Students in School Feeding Programme

The Conference of Heads of Basic Schools (COHBS) has appealed to the government to expand the School Feeding Programme to cover students at the Junior High School (JHS) level.

This call was made during the association’s 2nd Quadrennial Conference held in Tepa, where newly elected executives were introduced to lead COHBS in the Ahafo Ano North Municipal for the next four years.

Mr. Asare Kingsley, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of COHBS, emphasized the need to address the feeding challenges faced by JHS students, noting that some students attend school with the expectation of receiving food but are often disappointed.

He highlighted the disparity in current educational support systems, stating, “The School Feeding Programme has been beneficial to pupils in lower basic schools, but JHS students are not included. Meanwhile, other students in nursing training, teacher training, and even some senior high schools benefit from similar feeding initiatives. This exclusion is a serious concern and must be addressed.”

Mr. Kingsley added that the lack of meals at school is discouraging attendance and undermining learning among JHS students.

In a related address, the Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Grace Oppong Agyapong, urged headteachers to take full ownership of their roles in managing basic education and improving learning outcomes. She reminded them that they are essential members of the educational management team at the grassroots level.

“Headteachers must see themselves as part of the directorate and be committed to promoting quality education. They are not only facilitators of learning but also managers of the school environment,” she said.

She also encouraged the newly elected COHBS leaders to build on the achievements of their predecessors and help raise standards in the basic education sector.
