BECE School Selection Starts Today and Ends June 6 — FSHS Secretariat Releases Updated Guidelines.
BECE School Selection Begins Today and Runs Through June 6 — New Guidelines Announced
The process for selecting and placing candidates for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) officially starts today, May 27, and will continue until Friday, June 6.This year’s selection exercise comes with updated guidelines aimed at ensuring a smooth and fair placement of students into Senior High Schools (SHS), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and other programs.
Candidates are required to choose a total of seven schools, with five being their main choices and two acting as alternatives. These selections must be ranked in order of preference. Of the five main choices, students must select at least three boarding schools and two day schools. For the alternatives, students can also select boarding or day options.
The guidelines further specify restrictions on the categories of schools that candidates can choose. Each student is allowed only one Category A school and no more than two Category B schools. Students are discouraged from selecting all five main schools from Category C, to maintain a balance in school distribution and ensure fair access to quality education.
Once a candidate is assigned to a school, the placement is final, and no changes will be permitted. This makes it crucial for candidates and their parents to carefully consider their choices during the selection period.
For those interested in pursuing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, the new rules require candidates to select five institutions from Categories A, B, and C, with options for boarding or day schools. Likewise, students aiming for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields such as engineering, medicine, or space science are encouraged to prioritize STEM-focused schools from all categories.
Parental involvement is emphasized throughout the process. No school selection form will be accepted without a parent or guardian’s signature. Parents are also advised to keep a copy of the completed form for their records and to ensure proper follow-up.
To support candidates, parents, and school authorities, teams from the Free Senior High School (FSHS) Secretariat and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service have been deployed nationwide. These teams will conduct sensitization programs aimed at educating all stakeholders about the new selection procedures, helping to clear any confusion and ensure compliance with the guidelines.
This coordinated effort seeks to streamline the school placement process and reduce challenges experienced in previous years. The new regulations are designed to promote a balanced distribution of students across school categories while encouraging the pursuit of specialized programs that meet national development needs.
Candidates and their families are encouraged to carefully review the new guidelines and make informed choices to secure the best possible placements in this year’s BECE school selection exercise.
