Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is currently in the United Kingdom for a brief medical rest, following advice from her doctors.Government sources have confirmed that she is in stable condition and expected to return to her official responsibilities shortly.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on Tuesday, April 8, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, provided assurances regarding her wellbeing.
“She is in good health and taking a short rest as advised by her medical team. She should resume her duties in due course,” he stated, adding that she is currently in the UK.
His remarks echo earlier comments made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who addressed members of the Ghanaian community in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 6.
Mr. Ablakwa dismissed circulating rumours about the Vice President’s health, describing them as misleading and politically motivated.
“Let me reassure you that the Vice President is doing very well. Your thoughts and prayers have been powerful. I’ve spoken to her personally, and I can confirm that she is recovering steadily,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
Reports indicate that Vice President Opoku-Agyemang experienced health challenges after completing official assignments on March 28.
She initially received care at the University of Ghana Medical Centre before being flown abroad for further medical attention.
Since then, a wave of speculation has spread online, prompting government officials to counter misinformation.
Mr. Ablakwa urged the public to disregard what he called “vicious and unGhanaian propaganda.” He reaffirmed that Professor Opoku-Agyemang is making a strong recovery and will soon return to office.
“She continues to be an inspiration, especially to young girls across the country, proving that women are equally capable of leadership at the highest levels,” he added.
The Vice President’s return is anticipated soon, as the government continues to call for calm and encourages the public to rely on verified information rather than rumours.
