President TraorΓ© Declares Free Childbirth Care in All Public Hospitals in Burkina Faso

Prez Ibrahim TraorΓ© of Burkina Faso has announced a new policy eliminating childbirth bills in all public hospitals nationwide to ease financial pressures on expectant mothers.

In a major step toward strengthening maternal healthcare and easing the financial burden on families, President Captain Ibrahim TraorΓ© has unveiled a nationwide policy that makes childbirth services completely free for all women in public hospitals across Burkina Faso.

The announcement, made with heartfelt conviction, marks a transformative moment in the country’s healthcare system. President TraorΓ©, speaking passionately during a national address, described the new policy as a symbol of compassion and social justice, aimed at protecting the dignity and health of women and newborns.

“Childbirth is not just a medical event, it is a sacred moment of life,” the president declared. “No woman should ever be forced to choose between her safety and her financial situation when bringing a child into the world. We are ushering in a new era of care and responsibility.”

This landmark decision stems from a deeply personal experience. The president shared an emotional story from his early life, revealing that his mother nearly lost him during childbirth because she could not afford the hospital fees. That near-tragedy, he explained, has remained with him ever since, and today, it serves as a powerful motivator behind the policy.

“I have lived with the knowledge that I was almost lost before I began life. That pain should not be repeated in the lives of others,” he stated. “From this day forward, every pregnant woman who enters a public hospital in Burkina Faso must be attended to without cost.”

The policy is effective immediately and is expected to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates, which remain a concern in several parts of the country. It will also remove one of the biggest barriers that prevent women, especially those in rural or low-income communities, from accessing timely medical assistance during pregnancy and childbirth.

Health experts across the region have praised the initiative as a progressive and humane step forward. Free maternal healthcare, they say, not only saves lives but also strengthens families, empowers women, and contributes to national development by promoting a healthier population.

Government officials say additional investments are being made to equip hospitals with necessary supplies, hire more skilled healthcare workers, and ensure that the policy is implemented without disruption. The Ministry of Health has been tasked with monitoring the rollout and ensuring that every eligible woman receives the care she needs without discrimination.

President TraorΓ©’s announcement has resonated deeply with citizens, many of whom see the move as a reflection of leadership that listens to the struggles of ordinary people.

As Burkina Faso embarks on this bold healthcare transformation, the initiative stands as a powerful reminder that compassionate governance can drive lasting social change.
