Minister Outlines Improved SIM Registration: Human-Focused and Tech-Powered Approach

Minister Announces Improved SIM Registration with Focus on Technology and Customer Care

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has announced a revamped SIM card registration process designed to be more user-friendly and technology-driven.

The upcoming exercise is expected to address previous challenges and improve overall efficiency.

During an interview on Citi FM's Eyewitness News, George pointed out that the earlier re-registration process suffered from several lapses, including poor turnout and concerns over data security.

He attributed these issues to mismanagement by the previous administration, branding the exercise as unsuccessful.

The new system, he said, will utilize advanced digital tools to simplify registration, with a strong emphasis on user experience.

It is also intended to tackle the rising cases of SIM-related fraud by ensuring a more accurate and secure database.

Initiated in 2021, the earlier registration campaign required all users to link their SIM cards to the Ghana Card.

Despite multiple deadline extensions, a significant number of SIM holders remained unregistered, raising alarm over potential security gaps.

According to George, the revised exercise will focus on three main goals:

Enhancing national security by curbing the use of unregistered SIM cards in criminal activities

Strengthening regulation within the telecom sector through a comprehensive database

Promoting a safer, more efficient digital communication environment across the country

This move is part of the government’s broader agenda to modernize Ghana’s digital infrastructure and foster innovation in telecommunications.
