Government Introduces Online Platform to Assist First-Year Tertiary Students Through “No-Fee-Stress” Initiative
Government Launches Online Portal to Support First-Year Tertiary Students Under “No-Fee-Stress” Policy
In a bold step to remove financial barriers in higher education, the Government has officially launched a digital application portal for first-year students of public tertiary institutions to apply for financial assistance under the newly introduced “No-Fee-Stress” policy.
This policy, driven by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF), is designed to support students who face financial challenges in paying their tuition fees. It reflects a broader government agenda to make tertiary education more inclusive, regardless of a student’s financial background.
Launching the initiative in Accra, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, emphasized that the “No-Fee-Stress” policy is part of government’s commitment to human capital development through equitable access to education. According to him, no student should be left behind simply because they cannot afford the cost of higher learning.
“We believe that a promising future begins with education, and the government is ready to take bold steps to ensure that financial challenges do not become a barrier to young Ghanaians,” the Minister stated.
The newly launched portal at https —provides a user-friendly interface that allows eligible students to apply for financial support in just a few steps.
The same can also be done via the official SLTF website, sltf.gov.gh. Students will be required to provide basic personal information, academic details, and supporting documents as part of the process.
Dr. Saajida Shiraz, Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF, assured applicants of a smooth and transparent process. She noted that her outfit is fully prepared to handle a high volume of applications and that the digital system has been designed to reduce paperwork and delays.
For students who may encounter difficulties during the registration process, the SLTF has made support available through its national helpline, 0302 751 020, and at its various zonal offices spread across the country.
The introduction of the “No-Fee-Stress” portal comes at a time when many families continue to struggle with the rising cost of education. By easing this burden, the government hopes to increase enrolment and retention in tertiary institutions and empower a new generation of skilled professionals.
Stakeholders across the education sector have lauded the initiative as timely and impactful. If effectively implemented, the policy could transform the landscape of tertiary education in the country and serve as a model for similar interventions across the continent.
