GNAT Gives GES Until April 30 to Resolve Promotion Delays or Risk Nationwide Strike

GNAT Sets April 30 Deadline for GES to Address Promotion Delays or Face Nationwide Strike

The education sector is on edge as the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has issued a firm ultimatum to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Public Services Commission, demanding immediate action on delayed teacher promotions.

If no progress is made by Tuesday, April 30, 2025, GNAT says it will initiate a nationwide strike.

GNAT's General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, made this known in an interview with 3news.com on April 23.

He warned that failure to resolve the issue would make the GES and Public Services Commission fully responsible for any disruptions in May.

The union expressed frustration over the lack of promotions for over a thousand teachers, particularly those in lower ranks who have not received any promotion since 2019.

Mr Musah noted that while a few senior staff members have moved up the ranks, the majority—especially those in lower grades—remain stuck with no clear path forward.

“Our engagements with the GES and Public Services Commission have yielded nothing,” Mr Musah stated. “Only two regions have seen some action. What happens to the rest?”

He further highlighted that critical matters like upgrading and the scheme of service remain unresolved, contributing to the growing discontent among teachers.

GNAT is now appealing to the Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders to act swiftly to prevent a possible shutdown of schools, warning that the growing frustration could severely impact academic activities if not addressed immediately.

“We’re ready to support the reset of the system, but these delays must end. Teachers are demoralised, and the situation is simply unacceptable,” Mr Musah stressed.

With just days to the deadline, all eyes are now on GES and the Public Services Commission as pressure mounts to take decisive steps before the education system grinds to a halt.
