Finance Minister Announces Audit of GH¢67bn Arrears Before Any Payments

Government to Audit GH¢67bn Arrears - Finance Minister Declares.

Ghana's Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced that the government will not settle over GH¢67 billion in arrears owed by 23 ministries until a thorough audit is completed by the Auditor-General.

This move aims to promote transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

Dr. Forson made this declaration while addressing Chief Directors of the various ministries, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and integrity in the management of public funds.

He stated that no payment will be made until a full audit is completed, and the Auditor-General affirms the validity of the claims.

The Minister has directed all Chief Directors to fully cooperate with the Auditor-General to ensure that the auditing process is thorough, independent, and unimpeded.

He stressed that the Auditor-General has been given enough time to complete this process and requested full cooperation and complete disclosure from the ministries.

Dr. Forson insisted that no contractor or service provider has been paid so far under his watch, and none will be paid until the audit concludes and the Auditor-General validates the claims.

He emphasized that not a single pesewa will be paid without the Auditor-General's affirmative endorsement.

A critical part of the verification process involves the Auditor-General determining which claims have valid commencement warrants, a step deemed non-negotiable by the Finance Minister.

This move forms part of efforts to promote discipline and integrity in managing the country's finances, emphasizing clarity, audits, and responsible decision-making.

The Minister's firm stance comes amid growing public interest in government expenditure and increasing demands for accountability in using taxpayers' funds.

By prioritizing transparency and accountability, Dr. Forson aims to ensure responsible financial management and promote a culture of integrity in the use of public funds.

This approach underscores the government's commitment to prudent spending and economic reform, aligning with the President's vision for a more resilient and inclusive economy.
