Education Minister Sets Up Committee to Review Basic School Curriculum

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has established a 13-member committee to review and modernize the basic school curriculum across Kindergarten to Primary Six. 

The goal is to enhance teaching content and promote national values in early education, recognizing that a strong foundation is crucial for long-term progress.

Speaking at the event in Accra on April 16, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu highlighted that strong foundational learning is key to long-term progress. He explained that once the early years of schooling are properly structured, the entire education system will benefit.

The committee, comprising professionals from various education bodies, will focus on designing a curriculum that builds integrity, creativity, and critical thinking in learners. Key members include:

•Mrs. Mamle Andrews – Chief Director, Ministry of Education

•Prof. George K.T. Oduro – Technical Advisor to the Minister

•Prof. Yayra Dzakadzie – Director-General, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment

•Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis – Director-General, Education Service

•Prof. Azeko Salifu Tahiru – Chief Inspector, Schools Inspectorate Authority

•Prof. Christian Addai-Poku – Registrar, National Teaching Council

•Dr. Eric Adzore – Director-General, TVET Service

•Nana Baffour Awuah – Director, Pre-Tertiary Education

•Ms. Rejoice Dankwa – Director, TVET

•Mr. Insah Shirzu – Director, Planning, Budgeting, Monitoring and Evaluation

•Ms. Mavis Asare Donkor – Director, General Administration

•Dr. Samuel Awuku – Consultant in Education and Development

The minister introduced the "Beyond Academic Skills" initiative, incorporating hands-on activities like farming and painting to develop practical knowledge, discipline, and civic duty. 

The committee will clarify historical topics, particularly Ghana's origin story, to provide students with a clear understanding of their nation's past.

The revised curriculum aims to strengthen both academic performance and life skills, preparing students for success in and outside the classroom.
