63 Nsawam Prisoners Earn UCC Degrees, with 20-Year Convict as Top Graduate.
In a groundbreaking achievement, 63 inmates at Nsawam Medium Security Prison have successfully earned degrees from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) through the Prison Inmates Tertiary Education Programme (PITEP).
The graduates, who studied Commerce (Accounting and Management) and Education (Junior High School), completed their courses under UCC’s College of Distance Education (CoDE).
This ceremony, held inside the prison, marked a historic moment as the first batch to graduate under PITEP, highlighting how education is transforming lives behind bars.
Education as a Path to Rehabilitation
PITEP, spearheaded by the Plan Volta Foundation in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service, offers free tertiary education to inmates.
The initiative seeks to equip prisoners with academic and professional skills, increasing their chances of successful reintegration into society upon release.
Among the graduates, Matthew Milluzieh stood out as the valedictorian, earning the title of Overall Best Student with a remarkable CGPA of 3.8.
Currently serving a 20-year sentence since 2018, he described the programme as life-changing.
"We came here seeking redemption, and today, we leave with knowledge, ambition, and a renewed sense of purpose. This degree is not just a certificate; it’s proof that we can rebuild our lives," Milluzieh stated.
Two other inmates who also graduated with first-class honors received scholarships to pursue further studies, demonstrating the impact of the programme.
A Celebration of Determination and Growth
Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, praised the graduates for their dedication, emphasizing that their success is a powerful message of resilience and change.
"Education can turn lives around, and today’s achievement proves that rehabilitation is possible through learning. Let this be a stepping stone for greater opportunities," he encouraged.
These graduates are not just serving their time—they are preparing for a better future. Armed with knowledge and skills, they have a real chance at rewriting their stories beyond prison walls.
