Speaker of Parliament Issues Ultimatum Over "Daughter of a Murderer" Comment

Bagbin gives MP one week to confess over ‘Daughter of a Murderer’ comment as investigation begins.

Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has given a one-week ultimatum to the Member of Parliament responsible for the inflammatory "daughter of a murderer" comment. The remark, directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.

Bagbin condemned the comment as "reckless and deeply disturbing," emphasizing its potential to undermine the dignity and decorum of the House. He launched a formal investigation to identify the MP behind the statement, warning of severe consequences if they fail to come forward voluntarily.

The Majority Leader has backed Bagbin's ultimatum, urging the MP to take responsibility for their actions. If the MP refuses to come forward, the House will support imposing the highest sanctions once the investigation identifies the individual.

The controversy centers on a derogatory remark made during a parliamentary session on February 4, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Joseph Boakye Danquah's death. The comment insinuated that Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings' father, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, was responsible for past political killings – a claim subject to historical debate.

The incident occurred when an unidentified male voice from the parliamentary backbench interrupted Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin's address, shouting the offending comment. This led to immediate chaos in the chamber, with members expressing shock and disapproval.

Bagbin reiterated his commitment to upholding the integrity of Parliament, emphasizing the need for MPs to maintain decorum and respect for their colleagues. The Speaker's ultimatum has been seen as a decisive step towards addressing the controversy and promoting accountability within the House.
