SONA: Mahama must address cost of living, reinstatement of sacked Public Service workers – Labour
Labour Union Urge President Mahama to Address Cost of Living and Reinstate Sacked Public Service Workers.
Organised Labour has called on President John Mahama to present clear measures to address the rising cost of living and to outline steps for the reinstatement of public service workers dismissed after the December 7, 2024 elections.
As the President prepares to deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, labour leaders are urging him to prioritize economic recovery and job creation.
Speaking to 3News’ labour affairs correspondent, Daniel Opoku, they emphasized the need for concrete plans to improve workers’ welfare and address employment-related challenges.
Dr. Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, Deputy Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), highlighted the importance of clear job creation strategies.
"We expect the President to outline how jobs will be created so that people are not forced to seek employment through unofficial channels, only to face termination later," he remarked.
Dr. Otoo also stressed the need to reduce wage disparities in the public sector, urging the government to address the significant income gap between the highest and lowest earners.
Echoing these concerns, Abdul Moomin Gbana, General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU), expressed disappointment with recent base pay negotiations.
He argued that the rising inflation rate, which stood at 23 percent in early 2024, had weakened workers' purchasing power and called on the President to address the issue through policy interventions.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tanko Musah, General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), urged the President to outline sustainable funding plans for pre-tertiary education.
He welcomed recent comments from the Minister of Education regarding the uncapping of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and expressed hope that the President would confirm this commitment during the SONA.
Labour leaders were united in demanding a response from President Mahama regarding the revocation of appointments for individuals recruited into the Public Service following the 2024 elections.
They expect the upcoming address to provide clarity on these pressing issues and offer a comprehensive plan to improve the livelihoods of Ghanaian workers.
