President Mahama: Controller and Accountant General to Handle Trainee Allowance Payments

CAGD- Nursing & Teacher Trainees allowance

Nursing and Teacher Trainee Allowances to Be Paid by Controller and Accountant General – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a significant policy change to tackle the long-standing issue of delayed allowance payments to nursing and teacher trainees, aiming to bring much-needed relief to those affected.

During a recent thank-you tour in Tamale, a significant commitment was made to enhance the financial well-being of trainees. The announcement was made that the Controller and Accountant General's Department will now assume responsibility for administering trainee allowances directly.

This strategic move aims to synchronize trainee payments with those of public sector workers, ensuring timely and seamless disbursements. By streamlining the payment process, trainees can now focus on their development, armed with the financial stability and peace of mind they deserve.

“There is good news for nursing and teacher trainees,” Mahama announced. “Their allowances have been incorporated into the budget as part of compensation items, ensuring they are paid alongside public sector salaries. This change will put an end to the long-standing delays trainees have faced.”

The issue of trainee allowances has been a contentious one, especially during the 2016 elections and under the previous administration. By streamlining the payment process, Mahama aims to resolve past challenges and provide financial stability for future trainees.

Addressing the Textbook Shortage

Beyond the allowance reforms, Mahama also tackled concerns over the unavailability of textbooks in basic schools. He criticized the previous administration for introducing a new curriculum without ensuring that schools had the necessary learning materials.

“This year, the lack of textbooks in our schools will end,” he assured. “Honourable Haruna Iddrisu has been tasked with overseeing this initiative, and he has confirmed that Ghanaian printers will handle the production. This approach ensures that the funds remain within the local economy.”

Health Sector Improvements in the Northern Region

Mahama further outlined plans to enhance healthcare services in the Northern Region, particularly by upgrading the Old Tamale Central Hospital. He explained that this project, along with improvements to the Tamale Municipal Hospital (formerly Works Hospital), would help ease congestion at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

“These upgrades will strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure better access to medical services for the people of this region,” he emphasized.

Commitment to Agricultural Development

Highlighting the importance of agriculture, Mahama reiterated his government’s dedication to irrigation development as a means of enhancing farming practices. He stressed that investment in irrigation infrastructure would significantly improve agricultural productivity and support local farmers.

With these commitments, Mahama seeks to address key concerns in education, healthcare, and agriculture, reinforcing his broader vision for national development.
