NPP Directs Members to Cease Media Discussions on Party Disaffection

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a directive to its members, urging them to refrain from discussing issues that create disaffection within the party in the media. This decision follows the party's recent electoral defeat, which has led to widespread disappointment and frustration among its members.

In a statement dated March 20, 2025, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party acknowledged the emotional distress among its supporters. However, it called for calm and unity, emphasizing that internal matters should not be aired in public discussions.

Citing Article 10(7)(5) of the NPP Constitution, the statement reminded members that the party’s leadership is responsible for coordinating its activities. Therefore, all members must immediately stop making public statements that could foster negativity and unrest. The directive also referenced Article 3(5), which mandates members to promote and defend the party’s reputation.

To ensure compliance, the party announced that any member who violates this directive will be referred to disciplinary committees at the national, regional, and constituency levels.

The NPP urged its members to uphold party values and work towards rebuilding a stronger and more united front.

Analysis: Damage Control or Suppression?

This directive is a clear attempt at damage control following the party’s electoral loss. While the leadership seeks to maintain internal cohesion, critics may view this as an effort to suppress dissent. Given the growing role of media in politics, silencing discussions could further alienate disgruntled supporters rather than fostering unity.

What do you think? Should political parties control how members express their frustrations, or should internal democracy allow open criticism? Let’s discuss.
