Should Teachers 'SACK' Misbehaving Students from the Classroom?

Maintaining order in the classroom is a perennial challenge for educators. When students engage in persistent misbehavior, it can be tempting to remove them from the room to restore calm. 

However, this approach may not be the most effective solution. In fact, sending a student out of class can have unintended consequences that ultimately hinder the learning process. 

Here are five compelling reasons why teachers should reconsider removing misbehaving students from the classroom:

1.) Disruption of the Learning Process

Removing a student from the classroom denies them access to valuable instruction, which can have long-term academic consequences. Even if the student is causing distractions, sending them away does not address the root of the problem. 

Instead, the student misses out on essential learning opportunities, which can lead to knowledge gaps, decreased academic performance, and further behavioral issues. 

By keeping the student in the classroom, teachers can work to redirect their behavior while ensuring they remain engaged in the learning process.

Other students observe how teachers handle discipline, and frequent removals can create an atmosphere of fear, instability, or even chaos. Instead, using positive reinforcement, clear expectations, and proactive strategies helps establish a classroom culture based on respect, cooperation, and mutual support. By fostering a positive learning environment, teachers can promote social-emotional learning, academic engagement, and overall well-being.

Exploring Alternative Strategies

Rather than removing a student from class, teachers can employ a range of alternative strategies to address misbehavior, including:


Proximity control: Standing near the student to discourage disruptive behavior and provide individualized support.

Short breaks: Allowing the student to take a brief break to reset and recharge without leaving the classroom.

Private conversations: Discussing the behavior calmly and respectfully with the student, rather than addressing it in front of the class.

Behavioral contracts: Working with the student to establish clear expectations, goals, and consequences.

Seeking support: Engaging parents, counselors, or administrators if the behavior persists, to provide additional support and guidance.


By adopting these alternative strategies, teachers can create a more supportive, inclusive, and effective learning environment that promotes social-emotional learning, academic success, and positive relationships.
