If Some Parents Can Afford, Let Them Pay – Asantehene on Free SHS.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advocated for a comprehensive review of Ghana's Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

He proposes that parents who are financially capable should be given the option to contribute to their children's education, thereby enabling the government to redirect resources towards needy students through structured scholarship programs.

During a courtesy call by the Minister of Education and the Ashanti Regional Minister at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene underscored the challenges inherent in the current policy implementation.

He cited inadequate feeding arrangements, which compromise the quality of education and undermine the policy's objective of ensuring inclusive and effective learning.

To address these challenges, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II suggested that the government reconsider its resource allocation priorities. He recommended redirecting funds from less critical areas to bolster the education sector, with particular emphasis on:

1.) Infrastructure Development: Completing stalled construction projects, such as E-blocks, and addressing dormitory overcrowding.

2.) Teaching and Learning Resources: Providing essential science and IT laboratories, as well as necessary teaching materials.

3.) Student Welfare: Ensuring adequate feeding arrangements and addressing other basic needs.

The Asantehene also offered words of encouragement to the newly appointed Education Minister, urging him to approach his role with humility and dedication.

He emphasized the importance of commitment to improving the education sector, citing the minister's previous experience in other portfolios.
