GES Introduces New Subject Structure for SHS 1 in 2024/25

GES Adjusts SHS 1 Subject Structure for 2024/25 Academic Year

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced a restructuring of certain subjects for Senior High School (SHS) Year One students in the 2024/25 academic year.

This follows a decision by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) to separate some previously combined subjects to ensure better teaching and assessment.

Initially, Home Economics, Business Studies, and Religious Studies were planned as combined subjects under the new SHS curriculum.

However, in October 2024, NaCCA decided to split them into separate courses, as there wasn’t enough time to develop new Teacher Manuals before the curriculum was rolled out in November 2024.

With this adjustment, students who take Home Economics will now study Food and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, and Management in Living separately.

Each of these subjects will be taught for eight weeks. Business Studies will run for nine weeks, while Accounting will have a longer duration of fifteen weeks. Meanwhile, Islamic Religious Studies and Christian Religious Studies will each be taught for eighteen weeks.

To ensure proper assessment, WAEC will focus only on these subjects for SHS 1 students. Additionally, in line with the new Student Transcript system, teachers must set nine assignments for each subject during the academic year.

These assignments will be uploaded to the Student Transcript Portal.

Regional Directors have been tasked with informing SHS and SHTS Heads about these changes. Any clarifications should be directed to the regional education monitoring team.

This adjustment aims to enhance subject clarity and ensure students receive a well-structured education under the revised SHS curriculum.
