Former deputy finance minister questions 10% salary increase amid high inflation

Former Deputy Finance Minister Criticizes 10% Salary Increase Despite Rising Inflation.

Abena Osei Asare, the former Deputy Finance Minister and current Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, has raised concerns about the government's decision to approve a 10% salary increase for public sector workers under the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) despite the nation’s high inflation rate.

In an interview with Pure TV Online on March 3, 2025, she reflected on salary adjustments during her time in office from 2017 to 2025. According to her, salary increments were carefully aligned with inflation rates to help mitigate the financial burden on workers.

Citing previous examples, she noted that in 2017, when Ghana’s inflation rate stood at 11.8%, the government approved a 10% increase in base pay. Similarly, in 2018, with inflation at 11%, the base salary adjustment remained at 10%.

Given the current inflation rate of 23%, she expressed surprise that the latest salary increase had not been adjusted to reflect the rising cost of living.

Her remarks follow the government’s recent decision to implement a 10% salary increase for public sector workers, effective January 1, 2025.

In addition, the National Tripartite Committee has approved a 10% rise in the national daily minimum wage to offer some relief to workers struggling with escalating prices.

While these adjustments aim to ease financial pressures, critics argue that a 10% increase falls short of addressing the harsh economic realities caused by soaring inflation and the rising cost of living.
