Education Minister Proposes Emergency Fund for School Disaster Relief
Education Minister Advocates for Emergency Fund to Tackle Disasters in Senior High Schools
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has proposed the establishment of a dedicated emergency fund to address the effects of disasters such as fire outbreaks and rainstorms in senior high schools across the country.
According to him, this fund will be exclusively reserved for the prompt rehabilitation of school structures affected by such incidents, ensuring minimal disruption to academic activities.
During his visit to Labone Senior High School, where a fire recently ravaged three out of six dormitories, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting affected institutions. He further disclosed that the Northern School of Business in Tamale and a school in Akrokere, Ashanti Region, which also suffered storm damage, would receive similar interventions.
“I cannot specify the exact financial requirements for renovations at this stage, but rest assured, Labone SHS and the other affected schools will benefit from our emergency response efforts,” he stated. “This situation underscores the need for a dedicated emergency fund within the Ghana Education Service budget to enable swift responses to unforeseen disasters.”
Meanwhile, he announced that temporary accommodation arrangements would be made for displaced students while repairs are underway. Additionally, if the ministry’s budget allows, the government will initiate the construction of a new dormitory for Labone SHS.
“I have instructed a team to conduct an assessment immediately. Once completed, we will relocate affected students to temporary facilities, and renovation work will commence. If financial resources permit, we will also construct a new female dormitory for the school,” he assured.
