NUGS Suspends Demonstration Against WAEC

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has opted to suspend its planned protest against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), citing the organization's commitment to releasing all outstanding student results by February 28th, 2025.

This decision was precipitated by an emergency meeting convened by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies. The gathering brought together esteemed representatives from WAEC, including Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC Ghana, and Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC Head of Legal. NUGS President Daniel Korley Botchway led the students' union delegation.

According to a statement issued by NUGS, WAEC provided assurances that all pending results would be released prior to March 1, 2025. In light of this commitment, NUGS has resolved to suspend the planned demonstration, pending WAEC's adherence to the stipulated timeline.

Moreover, the GES Director-General has extended an invitation to NUGS to submit policy proposals aimed at reforming the procedures governing examination malpractice cases. This presents a pivotal opportunity for NUGS to advocate for a more equitable and transparent process, prioritizing the rights and interests of students.

NUGS has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the interests of Ghanaian students. "NUGS remains resolute in its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian students," the statement emphasized. "In the event that WAEC fails to meet the February 28th deadline, we will not hesitate to take further action to defend the rights of affected students."
