The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called on the Ministry of Education to review the current disciplinary measures in senior high schools.
According to the Association, revising these guidelines would grant school authorities the necessary powers to address student misconduct effectively.
NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, made this appeal during an interview with labour affairs correspondent Daniel Opoku. His comments followed the recent closure of Sokode Senior High Technical School after a violent clash between students and local residents.
In response to the incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched an investigation while NAGRAT has condemned the altercation.
Mr. Carbonu expressed concerns about the limitations placed on school administrators when enforcing disciplinary actions.
He highlighted the lack of academic accountability, noting that some students fail to meet performance standards but are allowed to progress through the educational system without consequences.
"When people hear 'corporal punishment,' they immediately think of caning, but there are other corrective measures available.
Currently, students who consistently underperform or show no commitment to their education are not being held accountable. We no longer repeat or withdraw students due to poor academic performance," he remarked.
He further criticized the existing disciplinary framework, suggesting that it undermines the authority of school leaders. "There are students who, from their first year, refuse to attend classes but still sit for exams and move on.
When school heads attempt to enforce discipline, they are told that current policies prevent them from taking action," Mr. Carbonu added.
NAGRAT is therefore urging the Ministry of Education to review and strengthen disciplinary protocols to foster a more accountable and productive learning environment.
