Gov't will support teachers to own cars for duty-bound purposes – Clement Apaak

Dr. Clement Apaak- Deputy Education Minister

Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Deputy Education Minister-designate, has revealed that the Mahama-led government plans to assist teachers in acquiring vehicles to facilitate their transportation to and from school.

This initiative aims to address the challenges some teachers face in reaching their workplaces, which often results in late arrivals or absenteeism due to transportation difficulties.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Tuesday for vetting, Dr. Apaak—who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Builsa South in the Upper East Region—underscored the critical role teachers play in the education system. He pledged to support teachers in pursuing professional development and to prioritize their welfare to enhance their performance.

He further disclosed plans to reinstate the Parents/Teacher Associations (PTAs) as a platform for open dialogue on challenges affecting schools and to mobilize resources for improving educational facilities. Additionally, Dr. Apaak highlighted the government’s commitment to completing the e-blocks and other abandoned educational infrastructure projects initiated by the previous administration.

Addressing concerns about examination malpractices, Dr. Apaak advocated for providing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) with adequate resources to engage their own invigilators rather than relying on private individuals. He also proposed implementing a system to serialize examination papers, ensuring candidates answer different sets of questions within the same examination center to curb cheating.

Emphasizing a comprehensive approach to education, he supported the provision of both manual textbooks and electronic learning materials to enhance teaching and learning. Dr. Apaak concluded by affirming his commitment to working alongside the substantive minister to effectively implement President John Mahama’s education policies.
