Five Students Injured as Peace Ceremony Between Bawku Schools Turns Violent

5 students injured

At least five students sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered minor wounds, following violent clashes during a peace ceremony between Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

The event, held at Bawku Technical Institute, was organized by school authorities in collaboration with the Kpalwega traditional rulers to resolve ongoing tensions between the two institutions.

As part of the reconciliation process, the traditional leaders introduced the burial of the okra stick, a symbolic ritual intended to promote lasting peace. However, tensions escalated during the ceremony, leading to violent exchanges as students from both schools began hurling stones at each other, disrupting the proceedings and causing multiple injuries.

The Bawku Divisional Police Command responded swiftly to restore order, while the injured students were transported to Quality and Vineyard hospitals in Bawku for medical attention.

Despite the disruption, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) proceeded with the symbolic ritual, which was successfully completed with the participation of senior prefects from both schools.
