NAGRAT Calls for the Exit of GES Deputy Director-General

NAGRAT Demands Removal of Prof. Smile Dzisi as Deputy GES Director-General

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has called for the removal of Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi from her position as Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

According to NAGRAT President Eric Carbonu, Prof. Dzisi’s appointment is inappropriate, as she does not have a background as a professional teacher.

He argued that leadership roles within the GES should be reserved for individuals who have progressed through the ranks of the service and have firsthand experience in pre-tertiary education.

Carbonu emphasized that appointing individuals without teaching experience to such key positions undermines the professional development of educators.

He pointed out that many pre-tertiary teachers hold advanced degrees, such as PhDs and master’s, making them well-qualified to take on leadership responsibilities within the service.

He further highlighted the distinct nature of pre-tertiary and tertiary education, stressing that professionals from the latter may not possess the necessary experience to oversee pre-tertiary institutions effectively.

NAGRAT has urged the government to prioritize experienced professional educators for leadership roles within the GES and to remove appointees who lack direct experience in the sector.

The association also called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that appointments within public and civil service institutions remain professional and non-partisan to better serve the interests of all Ghanaians.

In addition, NAGRAT is seeking a meeting with the President and other key stakeholders to address these concerns and discuss strategies to strengthen Ghana’s education system by empowering qualified educators to take on leadership roles.
