2025 WASSCE: We’ve not cancelled any allowances – GES fires back at former Education Minister.

2025 WASSCE: We’ve not cancelled any allowances – GES fires back at former Education Minister.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has pushed back against comments made by Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, who suggested that managerial lapses within the Service contributed to the performance decline in the 2025 WASSCE.

In a statement released on Monday, December 1, 2025, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Daniel Feny, the GES noted that it had been following the public conversations surrounding the release of the results and found it necessary to clarify matters to ensure a fair national discussion.

The Service described as baseless claims that GES had halted allowances meant for teachers. It indicated that there was no truth in the suggestion that any allowances had been withdrawn, explaining that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department had already issued a public clarification regarding the delay in the payment of November allowances.

The GES also encouraged the public to disregard Dr. Adutwum’s remarks, describing them as an attempt to divert attention from issues that occurred during periods he supervised earlier examinations.

GES further stressed that the 2025 WASSCE outcomes represent the genuine academic performance of candidates. It explained that before the examinations began, the Ministry of Education and GES issued firm directives against all forms of malpractice, including clear sanctions for both students and officials found culpable.

These measures were fully enforced during the examinations, supported by strengthened oversight and strict monitoring protocols that led to the arrest of some students and examination officers who attempted to break the rules.

Management added that the performance should be viewed as part of broader efforts to restore trust and integrity in the national examination system. According to the statement, the results reflect a renewed commitment to improving standards and ensuring that national assessments accurately represent students’ abilities. GES emphasised that these outcomes demonstrate ongoing measures aimed at strengthening the fairness and credibility of examinations across the country.

As Ghana prepares to rejoin the international WASSCE in May/June 2026 after operating a Ghana-only version, the Service encouraged candidates to study diligently ahead of the transition.

GES assured the public of its continued collaboration with school heads, teachers, parents, communities, civil society organisations and WAEC to strengthen learning, uphold examination standards and enhance transparency throughout the national assessment process.
